An Old Man Dreams

by Anonymous

An old man by the fire will dream of all

The little things he did when he was young

He will remember early walks among

The woods and fields, when barley was as tall

As he himself was then. He will recall

A thunderstorm, a poem, a linnet's song,

And cricket, too, and he will dream and long

for the sweet singing sound of bat and ball.

He will remember how he held a catch,

Or how he stayed two hours at the crease,

And by his stubborn effort saved the match

When none but he could still defend their wicket

Against such bowlers. Dreaming thus of cricket

While the fire crackles, he will be at peace.
