April: Freedom Week

When Common asks Assata Shakur 'what is freedom?' at the end of his tribute song, Song of Assata. Assata responds, "You're asking me about freedom? i know a whole lot more about what freedom isn't... coz i've never been free." She goes on to imagine what freedom could be.

It's Freedom Week in South Africa, that historical first vote for the oppressed Afrikan masses of South Africa happened eighteen years ago on 27 April. Now let's writer great poems, interrogate, question, image, dream about freedom.

my days as an addict by Les T

Posted by Poetry Potion on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, In : I find no peace and all my war is done
I walked the land
Eyes wide shut
Bumping into reality
In between highs
It was never
All flying fairies
And pink elephants in tutus
It was more like
Chapped lips
And constant headaches
Fights with my wife
About my constant relapse
It was real...
The fights I had with myself
And the ones I had with her
My inner turmoil
Leaving me more bruised
Than her fists on my back
Trying to beat some sense into me
A lot of fighting
A lot of inner searching
To find my peace

pieces of peace by Bulumko Nyamezele

Posted by Poetry Potion on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, In : I find no peace and all my war is done
I found myself forging heaven's swords from hell's furnaces.
With a mind full of doubt and a heart filled with love.
I lost myself listening to tales of death echoed from life's crevices,
holy wars fought on deconsecrated surfaces, revolution summoned by ideological pollution.

I'm seeking solutions from the cause manufacturers. with my fractured existence and desolate past
I seek affirmation from quicksand cultures that have me planting seeds on soils with devious contours,
urban folklore ...

Contrast by Taidgh Lynch

Posted by Poetry Potion on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, In : I find no peace and all my war is done
Most days he shuffles back-and-forth,
and in corner of his mind he scratches
notes from the past. All is grey and empty.
He fills his time contemplating wins and losses,
sketching memories of what and who he was.
The land is desert and stillborn.

Outside green fields are wide, purple heather
oceans deep enough to dive in.
Children clamour, like spider monkeys
up and over bales of hay,
laughing as they spring, the sky above
picassos over their haloed heads.

I Find No Peace by Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542)

I find no peace, and all my war is done.
I fear and hope. I burn and freeze like ice.
I fly above the wind, yet can I not arise;
An...
